Whether big or small almost everyone loves chocolate. In our supermarkets we find bulging shelves filled with sweet treats in every conceivable shape and flavor. You might wonder how chocolate is made or where cacao comes from. Or what the importance of chocolate in the history and culture of Central America is. You will learn all this during your chocolate tour in Costa Rica. Your guide will take you on an exciting journey that vividly depicts the journey from the cocoa plant to harvesting and fermentation to drying the seeds. Then comes the most popular part, when the cocoa beans are ground and processed in the traditional way to make the actual chocolate. Of course, you may taste to your heart’s content.
After the chocolate tour you are real connoisseurs and can impress your friends at home with your newfound expertise. Perhaps you will also acquire a taste for it and in future automatically reach for the higher-quality chocolate with a particularly high cocoa content on the supermarket shelves. Look for fair trade cocoa and products from sustainable cultivation. Chocolate tours can be found in various regions of Costa Rica including the southern Caribbean coast, Sarapiquí, near La Fortuna and in Monteverde.
Depending on the provider the times may vary. The tour from La Tirimbina in Sarapiquí departs in the morning at 8:00am or 10:00am, and in the afternoon at 1:30pm or 3:00pm.
The entire tour including snacking lasts about 2.5 hours.
